Meet the Team Behind This Evidence Review

Four physicians staff the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Dr. Ke He is the responsible physician for this evidence review; the Center Director is accountable for the standards the practice is held to, and the dermatologic member of the team carries the assessment of a skin condition that needs a diagnosis rather than a plan.

Skin quality assessed before a treatment plan · the measures with the strongest evidence · sequencing skin care around devices and surgery

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service — and she is the lead physician of this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, she has worked on the clinical front line in skin laser and injectable aesthetics for more than 20 years, serving over ten thousand patients.

On this subject her part is the assessment order. She asks what the skin is doing before discussing what could be done to it, separates the attributes a person is describing — tone, texture, firmness, lines — because they do not move together, and puts sun protection, a topical retinoid and barrier care into the plan at the assessment rather than after a device has irritated the skin. She is also the person who says that the boring measures come before any device when the question being asked is a surface question, and who says the opposite when the honest answer is laxity or volume loss and a course of surface treatment would only delay it.

Clinical focus

  • Assessing what the skin is doing before deciding what to do about it
  • Separating tone, texture, firmness and lines, which do not move together
  • Putting sun protection and a topical retinoid in the plan at the assessment
  • Sequencing skin care around device treatments and operations
  • Saying plainly when a structural treatment honestly comes first

Academic roles & achievements

  • Member, Laser Medicine Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Facial Rejuvenation Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Chongqing Plastic Surgery Quality Control Center
  • Published 5 papers, holds 5 national patents, and introduced 2 new clinical techniques

The order is the argument

Skin quality is not a treatment to be added at the end of a plan. The measures with the strongest evidence behind them are cheap, slow and unglamorous, and they work best when they are put in place before anything is done to the skin rather than after — which is why the question worth asking at an assessment is not what can be done, but in what order.
